On the New York State Barge Canal, near the northern tip of Cayuga Lake, in the Finger Lakes Tourism Region of Upstate New York.
The town was named for the river flowing through it, which, in turn was named for was named for the Seneca Indian tribe. Much of the land in this area, along Cayuga Lake, is the subject of a long-litigated claim by the Cayuga tribe.
Seneca Knitting Mills recently closed its 155-year-old factory here.
