Chestertown is the primary town serving the area that includes Friends Lake, Loon Lake and Brant Lake. All three lakes are relatively small, with Brant Lake the longest at about 5 miles in length. The population of the town is approximately 3,500, which makes it one of the larger communities within the Adirondack Park. Seriously.

More about the areas tourism and accommodations ...

The Town of Chester was established in 1799, and originally was made up of about 500 farmers, blacksmiths, millers and lumbermen. The lumber industry was the big ticket here, as logs were transported via the Hudson and Schroon rivers to the Glens Falls area, where they were milled.

Now, Chestertown is centrally located within a recreational paradise, with Schroon Lake just 10 miles to the north, Lake George a little farther to the southeast, and Gore Mountain about the same distance to the west. Its location at the intersection of U.S. Highway 9, N.Y. Route 8 and Interstate 87 make Chestertown convenient to all of the southern and central Adirondacks. The area boasts some fine restaurants and country inns as well as a good collection of antique and craft shops. Main Street (U.S. 9) is attractive and quaint for its couple of blocks, and the Grand Union supermarket makes up for its lack of quaintness by serving its purpose as the 'stock-up' center for the area.
