More about the areas accommodations and tourism

Much of Monhegan is held in trust, to be kept forever wild. paths for hiking ramble around the island, through pine forest, across wildflower meadows, and along rocky cliffs overlooking the sea. Deer roam freely, and whales and seals frolic off the cliffs. On the eastern side of Monhegan, ruggedly beautiful headlands rise more than 150 feet. On the westward side, the island slopes gently to the harbor, flanked by the companion island of Manana. This side of Monhegan is dotted with summer cottages and the homes of the fishermen who brave the New England winters.

Every season on Monhegan is rich in new discoveries. The Island is located on the Atlantic [Eastern] bird migration flyway, where, in spring and fall, both birds and bird watchers flock. In the summer, the island comes to life with visitors, photographers, and artists. Many open their studios or offer workshops. Local sailors offer popular day trips to see puffins and seals. And, finally, winter is a special season for the few who brave its bluster by the sea.
