Sugar Hill Harlem Inn, Manhattan, New York
We invite you to experience a piece of American History. From the forgotten Weckquasgeek Tribe, to the first middle class families that moved to this block in 1906 to the Harlem Renaissance and right up until today. This part of Harlem breaths history like no other - Sugar Hill. This is after all where Miles Davis came to meet Sonny Rollins and hang out with him, and his Sugar Hill Harlem crowd. Even before that there was Duke Ellington, his buddy Billy Strayhorn and Paul Robeson, the list is long and there are many more. Sugar Hill Harlem Inn is located in the landmark district of Sugar Hill, in a Victorian townhouse built in 1906. All our rooms celebrate this history, and each room is named for one of the late great artists who were associated with this district.
No Smoking in any of our rooms. However, we have a garden where not only can you smoke, but you are welcome to try our own "Sugar Hill Harlem Home Grown 1000% organic tobacco", which by the way is now a registered trade mark!!

Sugar Hill Harlem Inn is located in the landmark district of Sugar Hill, in a Victorian townhouse built in 1906. In 2001 we did a complete renovation of all the electric, the plumbing the bathrooms and the kitchens, taking great care to preserve the historical details of the building. We have 2 rooms with private bathroom on the 1st floor. Satchmo's Room is named for Louis Armstrong. He was born in New Orleans, but he lived the last years of his life in Corona, a working class neighborhood in Queens. He frequently performed in some of the great clubs in Harlem. He was the most respected jazz musician of his era and most probably the greatest horn player in the history of jazz. And so it is fitting that this is the largest room in the house. This room has a fireplace, original wood floors and oriental rugs, a king size bed, a large bathroom, with separate shower and bathtub. It also comes with an outside deck.
We have two studios with private bathrooms and kitchens on the 2nd floor. Miles Room is named for Miles Davis who was an early Sonny Rollins fan and hung out with him and his Sugar Hill Harlem crowd that included, Jackie Mclean, Kenny Drew, and Art Taylor. Miles Davis was one of the most influential and innovative musicians of the 20th century.
We have one 2 bedroom suite, The Renaissance Suite, (Living Room from the Renaissance Suite) named for the black renaissance and cultural revolution that took place in Harlem in the 20's and 30's and was a profound musical, literary and political movement. It is on the 3rd floor. So steps must be your thing as there is no elevator. But it is a nice walk as there is a beam of light bursting through the skylight at the top of the stairs, where you enter into a large living room, with original wood floors and oriental carpets, and a fireplace.
