Centrally located in the Black Hills, three miles to Custer State Park, eighteen miles to Mount Rushmore, four miles to Crazy Horse Mountain, and adjacent to Flintstone Village. Custer has a population of 1,741 and is the oldest city in the Black Hills. We have a museum in the old courthouse telling of our history. The elevation of our city is the highest in the Black Hills at 5,318 feet. We have wonderful evening music shows and quality attractions. The George S. Mickelson Trail running through Custer and trails in Custer State Park offer biking and hiking opportunities. Nearby lakes offer swimming, boating, and picnicking. The summer weather in the Black Hills area is sunny, warm and dry. Daytime temperatures climb into the 70s and 80s and sometimes the 90s. Early mornings are cool. Humidity levels are low, so even the hottest days are comfortable. Sporadic thunderstorms over the Black Hills in the afternoon and evenings are frequent and usually brief. The hottest month is July with an average temperature of 73 degrees. Average annual rainfall is 18.07 inches and 38 inches of snow.
