Fahnestock House, Galesburg, Illinois
Known as the Fahnestock House for over 100 years, the home is named for its original owners, John C. and Grace Fahnestock. Mr. Fahnestock was a prominent local merchant in the 1870's and later a land and immigration agent for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad.
The home is a fine example of Victorian architecture in the Queen Anne style. Built in 1890, it features a three story turret and bow window, beautifully carved woodwork, open staircase, and beautiful beveled glass and etched windows. Outside features include a large covered front porch and a semicircular open verandah. The large lawn includes a formal perennial garden, fountain and patio.
Located on the corner of Prairie and Losey Streets, The Fahnestock House is in the heart of Galesburg's most historic neighborhood, filled with magnificent Victorian homes.
A six-block scenic walk downtown, offers numerous antique shops, theaters and The Seminary Street Historic Commercial District, a neighborhood of upscale shops and restaurants Three blocks south of downtown is the campus of Knox College the site of a Lincoln-Douglas debates.
