May Farm Bed and Breakfast & Maple Leaf Cottage, Stowe, Vermont

Deep in the Green Mountains of Vermont, in the quaint Stowe area, lies the beautiful May Farm Bed and Breakfast. Built around 1790 as the main home of a 400+ tree maple sugar bush and what may have been the last sheep farm in the area, the inn hosts guests from around the world. In early July we opened our sixth guest room—the Walker Room. Walker is our largest and most comfortable main inn room with a quiet, ground floor location and a private entrance. It is outfitted with a queen size bed plus a twin bed so it is able to accommodate three quests. It also contains all of the amenities of our original B&B rooms, private en suite bath, TV, air conditioning and a hair dryer. (Like our other main inn rooms it is suited for guests ages 14 or older.)

With the introduction of Scottish High Tea and a new guest room, this seemed like a good time to do something we’ve been thinking about for quite a while. We are renaming all the rooms in the main inn, using our family names. Allan’s father came to New England from Scotland – a town called Ardrossan, near Glasgow, while Jackie’s great-grandfather brought his family from Aberdeen to Barre, here in Central Vermont. He was a stonecutter in Scotland, and Barre was settled in large part by the Scots, who quarried the stone, and Italians, who carved it. (Barre’s Rock of Ages Granite Quarry is the world’s largest dimensional quarry and we recommend that all our summer guests visit it!) Allardyce and Wylie are Allan’s family names, and Walker and Christie are Jackie’s. It all fits nicely, since the May family, who bought the farm in 1834, worked it as a farm well into the 1900s – and May is also a Scottish name! For those of you that have visited May Farm in the past (welcome back!), the Blue Room is now the Allardyce Room; the Rose Room is Christie; and the May Room is Wylie. The names for Maple Leaf Cottage and Snowshoe Loft are unchanged. With the new room and a few other changes we are making May Farm can now accommodate up to 14 guests.
