Martin Hill Inn consists of two period buildings. The land on which the main and guest houses are located was sold by former Lieutenant Governor George Vaughn to the Martin Family in 1710 for 50 British pounds. Over the years this section of Portsmouth became known as Martin Hill. The main house, circa 1815, contains three guest rooms furnished with period furniture including queen-size canopy or four-poster beds. The guest house, circa 1850, contains four rooms furnished with queen-size can opy, spindle, or iron and brass beds. All rooms have writing tables and sofas or separate sitting areas. Each has a well appointed modern private bath. Distinctive wall papers and window treatments accent the attention to detail and help provide each ro om with its own character. Air conditioning ensures that each of our guests will enjoy a comfortable night's rest.

After a busy day, return to the Inn and relax in the lovely perennial gardens that cover much of the property. Sit by the water garden and enjoy the peaceful sounds of running water as you plan for dinner at one of Portsmouth's many outstanding restaurants.

The guest house is connected to the main house by a short flower lined brick path and patio with a lush water garden. The inn has been chosen by Yankee Magazine's 1999 Travel Guide to New England as one of its "Editors Picks". We are always available to help plan your activities, discuss restaurants and make reservations if you wish, plan day trips, or recommend areas and points of interest worth visiting along the immediate seacoast and throughout all of New England. We are open all year, and serve a full country breakfast in our antiques-filled dining room.
